Our Organic Philosophy
We are certified by a state-approved organic inspection body in accordance with the German Organic Out-of-Home Catering Regulation (Bio-AHVV). This certification confirms that our use of organic products and our processes meet strict, officially regulated standards – independently verified and fully transparent.
What does being a bio hotel mean to us?
“A little bit organic” might work at home – but running a hotel is different. A bio hotel can only be managed with real consistency and conviction. It is not just about high ecological standards, but about a well-thought-out, holistic approach.
We operate sustainably, source our products locally and pay close attention to environmentally friendly energy use and waste cycles. Every decision we make follows the same principle: responsibility towards nature, our region and our guests.
Our hotel is regularly audited by independent certification bodies. This ensures maximum transparency and gives you the reassurance that, with us, bio hotel truly means organic – without compromises.
Our Bio Hotel Values
As a bio hotel, we are guided by a clear set of values – to help make the world a little better, and to ensure that you feel genuinely comfortable and well looked after during your stay with us.
Parking with charging stations
All eight parking spaces in our courtyard are equipped with electric vehicle charging points. We charge exclusively with green electricity, partly generated by our own photovoltaic system. If required, please reserve your personal parking space in advance. The fee is €10 per night, plus €0.65 per kWh for charging.
All food and beverages served at our hotel are 100% organically certified and sourced from regional suppliers – many of whom we know personally. We also produce a selection of our food in-house, including homemade jams, chutneys, smoked cheeses and wild game ham.
Many products such as coffee, tea and sugar carry the Fairtrade label. Vegetarian and vegan guests are equally well catered for: both at our generous breakfast buffet and in the evening in our tapas bar, you will find a wide and carefully curated selection.
At Biohotel KUNSTQUARTIER, we primarily rely on solar energy for hot water and electricity. When solar power is not sufficient, we purchase certified green electricity and heat our water using an air-source heat pump. During peak demand periods, a gas boiler can be activated as a supplementary system.
To keep energy consumption as low as possible, we use a modern room management system that regulates energy use based on occupancy. Waste reduction, recycling and the composting of organic waste are, of course, integral parts of our concept. For example, we use paper that is preferably recycled or at least FSC-certified.
Our guiding principle is to avoid CO₂ emissions wherever possible. Per guest, our emissions are below three kilograms of CO₂ per overnight stay including breakfast – placing us among the top ten bio hotels in this category.
Even so, we have taken the conscious decision to operate our hotel as carbon neutral by purchasing certified carbon offset credits. And we go one step further: we also cover the CO₂ compensation for our guests’ arrival and departure, so you can travel with an even lighter footprint.
Sandstone, slate, travertine – from the very beginning, we placed great importance on using high-quality natural materials throughout the building. In the corridors, the original hand-moulded bricks were carefully restored and reused as wall cladding. Interior furnishings made from solid wood by local carpenters go without saying.
Our bed linen is made from organic cotton and produced under Fairtrade conditions. A special highlight awaits guests staying in our Junior Suite, Suite and Apartment: here you sleep under duvets filled with soft alpaca wool from our own private organic farm, operated under heritage-breed conservation principles. For guests with allergies, we are of course happy to provide special synthetic duvets.
In the historic part of the building, all electrical cables have been shielded to minimise electromagnetic exposure. In addition, the entire hotel was examined by a geomancy expert for natural energy and disturbance fields.
The reassuring result: there are no underground water veins or disruptive energy fields beneath our building – creating a calm and balanced environment for rest and relaxation.
Sustainability only works when approached together. That is why we collaborate closely with people, initiatives and organisations who share our values – exchanging ideas, learning from one another and continuously evolving.
Among other things, we are part of the BIO Metropolregion initiative and are actively involved in the Common Good Economy (Gemeinwohl-Ökonomie) movement. Both networks reflect our conviction that responsible business can – and should – contribute positively to society, the environment and future generations.
Much more than “just” organic
Alongside our consistently sustainable philosophy, we place great value on individuality and aesthetics. We are both a bio hotel and a design hotel – and we pursue both with genuine passion.
From the moment you step into KUNSTQUARTIER, you can sense its distinctive atmosphere. It is the result of great care and sensitivity in the renovation of the historic building fabric, a respectful approach to architecture and a thoughtful selection of materials and furnishings.
Each of our 23 bio hotel rooms is truly one of a kind. Our design concept deliberately stands apart from the uniformity of large hotel chains, offering character, authenticity and a very personal sense of place.
